dailyMYB: HOW STRONG IS A SINGLE SONG?
It can literally lift you out of bed. It can push you through an entire mile. It can make you sprint the last .2 after running 26 miles. It can scrub off all the effects of a crappy day in minutes. Do not underestimate the power of a good song. But it’s up to you to position these POWER SONGS at the right moment in time when you’ll need them most. At the beginning of an early morning run. When your alarm clock goes off. Up the biggest hill in the park. At the end of a long bike ride. In the middle of your yoga mix when things get tough. Before a big meeting. Wherever you need them, have them in your back pocket there ready and waiting. Use the insanely strong power of music to your advantage! Pump your ipod full of the best pop, rock, hardcore or whatever kinds of songs you love. It could change everything about the way you see a situation. It could help you let go of negativity you want to shake off. It can change your direction in life—seriously! Music is like your own personal cheer squad ready to rock out at a moment’s notice! Empower it to empower you. And ROCK ON! High-res

MOTIVATION: music.
When I moved to New York just days after graduation, it took me a full year to get back into running. I played soccer and danced in college and running wasn’t really part of my routine. Until I got an MP3 player (am I dating myself?!). I literally ran with a disc man at some points in my life, which is a PAIN when it comes to skipping CDs. I digress… Music literally got me back running and probably single-handedly got me through 4 marathons. My playlists are strategic and specifically plotted. But running mixes aren’t where the music stops. Because your yoga class doesn’t have to be all sanskrit music, anymore.
Sometimes, you want a deeper, more contemporary playlist to take you through the flow. And in celebration of Fall, this playlist via lululemon athletica does just that. Check it out.

St. Vincent – SurgeonAnyone who toured with Sufjan Stevens is going to have nomadic themes running through their work. St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, sounds like Kate Bush’s delicate little sister who sparkles herself in fairy dust. This track floats and meanders but instead of sounding wayward, St. Vincent’s voice glides through each beat on its own sensual clock.
Active Child – When Your Love Is SafeAmbient electro music, that seems to draw inspiration from each corner of the planet. The lyrics of this gem are all about realisation and taking back our power. If you get a chance, check out Active Child live – they put on a rad show.
Beirut – Santa FeCombining soaring vocals and weird Gypsy-tinged instrumentals, Beirut makes some of the most poignant, interesting music on the scene. His voice is distinct but not jarring; he sounds like a Martian from the Roaring Twenties – and that is a compliment.
Mary J. Blige – All That I Can SayMary keeps it real as usual, telling us how she spent her whole life looking for meaning – and the day she stopped searching for it, the meaning came and found her.
Bon Iver – CalgaryThe current king of the indie scene has brought the heartfelt singer-songwriter genre back to the mainstream. It’s no wonder; the lyrics to this song are gorgeous, weaving between allegory and literal references in a way so earnestly romantic that it breaks your heart.
Brandon Flowers – Only The YoungThe frontman of the massively popular group The Killers, Brandon Flowers is searching more than ever for something. Here he talks about second chances and filling dark corners with light.
Radiohead – All I NeedWho we are on the mat is who we are off the mat. When this realisation happens, it is both powerful and revealing. Are you often late to class? Do you rush through poses, trying to perfect them on the first try? The parallels that can be drawn between yoga and ‘real’ life are remarkable; all we need is our yoga mat (and maybe some reminders from Thom Yorke) to work on our whole selves.
Feist – The Circle Married The LineLeslie Feist has the uncanny ability to write songs that satisfy the cravings in our head. You know when you’re listening to a song and a string of notes are played – and it’s like they were engineered to be the exact ones your brain wanted to hear? This is Feist’s remarkable gift. This song’s chorus has reverse scales that will make the hairs on your arms stand at attention.
Beck – Lost CauseWhen a relationship has gone past the point of no return, we can feel it in our hearts and in our bones. Beck perfectly sums up the ironically sweet misery of the letting go process.
AA Bondy – I Can See The Pines Are DancingWildly underrated, AA Bondy makes a declaration with every line he utters in this cozy little ditty. He is arrestingly self-possessed (“I am a fire and I must burn today”) and surprises us further by cooling down his smoldering tracks with Dick Dale-esque surf guitar riffs.
Kings of Convenience – HomesickThis Norwegian duo uses their voices to complement their music, rather than compete with it. This balance and harmony work perfectly to create meaningful, pastoral tunes perfect for deep stretches and grateful thoughts.
May this playlist warm your heart and ears as you take on another crisp fall season.

MOTIVATION: a SHOUTout!

Thanks to caryrandolph.tumblr.com/about for today’s shoutout to MYB! Nothing better than rocking a hot outfit after a seriously sweaty workout. After all, what’s a better reward than looking as good on the outside as you feel on the inside? Plus, it’s my personal belief that sweat and style CAN co-exist. :)

PS - this song rules.
