MOTIVATION: revolutionizing the dinner party.
We’ve all been there. The dreaded big group dinner. Whether it’s a group birthday party, an expensive bachelorette celebration or a girls night out, you might as well throw $200 bucks down the toilet. And don’t forget to get ready for an upset stomach, limited healthy menu options and a random guy sitting next to you who refuses to agknowledge that you just dropped “my boyfriend” in every sentence since he sat down and started hitting on you. And you didn’t actually expect to talk to the guest of honor, did you?!
Well, last night I was lucky enough to get an invite to the answer to all your big group dinner woes! Two @NutritionSchool grads (and friends!), Caline of Health with Caline + Danielle of Vital Dish have launched The Seasonable Social, a private cooking class + dinner party business that offers group classes and private events in the NYC area featuring originally created recipes tailored to fit all kinds of events. While last month’s event featured healthy “game day” eats, last night’s focus was gluten-free recipes using whole foods and none of those wannabe-healthy “gluten-free” processed faux-foods. Check outwww.moveyourbootyeats.tumblr.com for the delicious Kale Salad with Mape Dressing recipe that Caline + Danielle created!
Instead of dining out with your friends in a super loud and expensive restaurant, #SeasonableSocial is awesome because you’re in a kitchen with your friends, drinking wine, learning cooking tricks of the trade, cooking up your own dinner and learning new recipes and ingredients along the way. THEN you’re dining together and digging in just like you would a restaurant, but this time you’re chowing down on your very own creations! Now show me some fancy Manhattan restaurant that can do that?!
Want to bring @TheSeasonableSocial over for your next event? Want to attend their next group class? Connect with them over at The Seasonable Social Facebook page and get seasonably social! Thanks Caline, Danielle and everyone in the class last night!
MOTIVATION: embrace the morning.
Yes, it’s tough to wake up and get out of your warm cozy bed. But the few morning hours before we whisk off to work can be the most productive and powerful moments of our day!
Taking a few simple steps will set your day up for success, energy and focus without being pulled in a million directions by outside forces. Here are some simple suggestions via MIND BODY GREEN.
6 Super Easy Morning Routines For Optimal Health
Incorporate any one of these into your morning routine to see positive changes in your life.
1. Drink 1 liter (about 4 cups) of water.
From the time you wake up in the morning to when you leave your house for work, try drinking a liter of water. Many of us do not realize that are bodies detox when we sleep. When you flush your body with clean water in the morning, you’re flushing the toxins out through your kidneys. This can prevent the sluggish feeling in the am.
2. Drink hot water with lemon.
Drinking hot water with lemon in the mornings before you eat breakfast will have a positive impact on your health. The lemon in the water will not only stimulate your digestion to begin breaking down foods for the day, it will also help support your liver in the processes of breaking down and removing toxins from your body.
3. Exercise or stretching.
Whether it’s a kickass workout or a 10-minute stretch before getting ready for work, morning movement will not only wake you up in the mornings, but also can tone muscles as well as prevent any muscle injuries throughout your day. Sitting for 8 hours of your day can lead to stiff and aching muscles, and stretching them out first thing in the morning can prevent uncomfortable aches and pains.
This is the most amazing nutrition blog I’ve seen in a LONG time. Nutrition just got thug. Get yours. Thanks to #spikesandheels for posting!

THERE’S SO MUCH GOD DAMN SPINACH in this shit even Popeye can’t hate. Yeah spinach makes you swoll as fuck, we know that. But did you know just one cup of spinach is over 300% of your daily recommended Vitamin A? Sweet fuck. You worried about acne? Wrinkles? Any other skin shit? Spinach to the mother fucking rescue. That shit keeps your skin looking so fresh and so clean, not to mention helping to prevent skin cancer. Spinach has these plant-based compounds called “flavonoids” that not only repair damaged skin but also fight multiple types of cancer. Everybody knows I ain’t even fucking playing when it comes to dick cancer, I gotta have my shit in tact.
IF YOU SMOKE cigarettes (tumblr crew I’m looking at you), DO NOT take any Vitamin A or beta carotene supplements. Studies have shown that combining those supplements with tobacco drastically increases your risk for lung cancer. But then again, smoking drastically increases your risk for lung cancer. So quit that shit.
You want to make this shit at home and tell Jamba Juice they can go fuck themselves by not paying for their high calorie sugary shit? Recipe below for a Thug Kitchen Original:
SPINACH COOLER
Ectoplasm free and Dr. Venkman approved
- 2 handfuls of spinach (about 2 cups)
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1 cup chopped and skinned cucumber
- 4 medium chunks of pineapple
- 1 cup coconut water or tap
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1 tablespoon flax oil (optional)
- 6-8 mint leaves (optional, but I dig that shit)
- yields ~20 ounces
Toss that shit in a blender and zap it. If you prefer it a little sweeter, add some more pineapple to that shit. DRINK UP, CHAMP.
Seriously though, fuck Jamba Juice. Only they could make smoothies as unhealthy as McDonald’s made oatmeal.
MYBlink: Is Soda Worse Than Cigarettes??!?
Apparently so. Check out the latest from www.healthuncensored.com:
“Soda is the most devastating thing you can put into your body. Soda has phosphates to keep the sugar in solution. Phosphates leach calcium out of your body which means weak bones. The pH of a dark colored soda is 2.5. It takes 10 gallons of water to neutralize that acid level. A can of soda has 39g of sugar. Sugar is inflammatory. It leads to metabolic disarray and immune dysfunction. It makes pain sensitivity worse, so if you have pain and you eat sugar, you will hurt more. One soda is more dangerous than one cigarette.”

We say it all the time:
I’m going to “be” healthy today.
I’m trying to “eat healthy.”
I have to “get healthy.”
What does that really mean exactly?!
Let’s be honest here. “Being healthy” isn’t arriving at some shining temple of kale. It’s a pile of good decisions we make day after day that eventually envelopes us and makes us feel awesome. But it’s not a constant. It’s something we have to fight for. Luckily it just so happens that exactly as much effort as we put in, we get the same amount out. Remember that when you don’t feel the perks right away. You will benefit from your efforts. Promise. Awesomeness is on the way. In fact, it comes even faster when you release the pressure we put on ourselves to “be” healthy or “be” this or that. Even to “be” happy. Drop it. Instead, simply start DOING. And be proud of every “DO” you accomplish. All of a sudden we become a happier, healthier us.
So get DOING healthy, people! ;)

MOTIVATION: secret salad dressing trick.
Greens are such a clutch addition to your daily menu. Salads can be packed with lots of great veggies, nuts and fruits that we all strive to include in our diets. But a major misstep people make is adding BORING plain greens and veggies into their diet in an effort to eat “more healthy.” But here’s the deal, not even the most hardcore greens lovers want boring plain greens all the time. So perfecting your favorite salad dressing is a must!
The recipe below is one of my all-time favorites that I learned from my mom. It can be done with either olive oil or vegetable oil. Enjoy!
6 tbs olive oil
1 tbs red wine vinegar
1 tbs white wine vinegar
1/4 tsp herbes de Provence (found in the spice aisle)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 clove crushed garlic (or more if you’re a garlic lover like me!)
Then mix all ingredients together and shake in a sealed container like crazy!!

MOTIVATION: yoga how you wanna!
You can still appreciate the rich history of yoga while interweaving it into your own life in a modern way.
Last night I had an AWESOME yoga experience with my friends Jake and Enrica (an awesome teacher who trained @ Laughing Lotus NYC) who cooked dinner while leading a yoga class in the living room/kitchen. Talk about amazing smells while inhaling and exhaling! Why choose between dinner date OR yoga class? Do both!
How do you YOGA?!

MOTIVATION: detoxifying foods.
Think the only way to detox is with a juice cleanse? Think again!
Our bodies are naturally built to detoxify us. Everyday, we eliminate and neutralize toxins through our colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph, and skin. It’s just that, in this day and age, these organs often get over-worked from the constant barrage of toxins from pollution, animal products, and processed foods.
Luckily, Mother Nature has the perfect antidote!
Below are 9 potent detoxifying foods that support your body’s natural cleansing system…and you don’t have to juice them to get the benefits. You’ll receive benefits just by incorporating more of the following foods into your diet:

MOTIVATION: crowding out the bad by adding in the good.
There’s a theory called “crowding out” in nutrition where instead of quitting all the stuff you love that’s so-called “bad” (you’ll never take my pasta!!), you simply add more of the superfoods that are delish + nutrish into those dishes you love to up their value. This is a no brainer and easy to do.
Gwyneth herself speaks to it in this edition of GOOP.

Superfoods
Happy 2013! I am not on a detox. I am not on a diet. I know, New Year’s cleansing and all that. Not this year. Can’t do it. Maybe later in the year. Maybe in the spring. So for now, I would like to continue with my pasta and cheese, but perhaps be more mindful of ingredients. I asked my friend Dr. Frank Lipman about his list of superfoods so that I could incorporate them into my diet a bit more. If you are going to eat pasta, why not serve it with a walnut pesto (walnuts are on his list)? You get my point. We had great fun in the goop test kitchen coming up with these ways to incorporate these miraculous foods into very tasty recipes. We hope you enjoy.
Love,
gp

MOTIVATION: throw away that scale.
We’ve been talking about it over here for a while now and now Tara Stiles is taking on the topic, too. THE SCALE.
This thing that’s supposed to know more about your body than you do. This thing that can control your mind, the way you see yourself and your mood. JUMP OFF IT! Nobody knows more about your body than you — we just gotta tune in.
Check out what Tara has to say: VIDEO: Throw Away the Scale (by TaraStilesYoga)
