dailyMYB: YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK.
Body follows mind. Plain and simple.
Think you CAN’T do something and your body will follow suit. The minute your mind accepts defeat—even before it has actually happened—your body shuts down. However, think you CAN do something — even before your body actually proves it — and your body wills it so. Funny how that works. Maybe that whole “mind over matter” thing ain’t so bad.
So how does it relate to fitness? You’re either in shape or out, right? Wrong. Way wrong. Think you can run that extra mile? Pedal that much harder? Hold that crazy hard pose one minute more? Workout on a day you thought you couldn’t? Convince your mind you can and your body will. Guaranteed you will surprise yourself.
For example, set out on a run you say will be 2 miles long and by 2 miles, you’ll be tired enough to stop. But, set out on a run to last all of 6 miles — a full 10K — and you’ll blast by that 2 mile mark in a flash. Come mile 5 and 6, you’ll be ready to cross that finish.
When you commit to a fitness activity, it’s not just about being psychically ready. It’s about being MENTALLY ready, too. When you train your body you also train your mind.
Forget what others think or say or do. Because the MOST important person you need to convince of your potential is YOU.
It’s not about whether your body CAN or CAN’T do something. It’s the will to mentally accept that perhaps you can. All your body needs is the sign from your mind that it’s possible.

dailyMYB: DITCH ANY AND ALL NEGATIVITY.
You ain’t got time for that.
If it’s pulling you down. if it’s stopping you in your tracks. If it puts added weight on your shoulders. If it makes you second-guess yourself. If it keeps you up at night. If it creates a pit in the bottom of your stomach. If it pushes you in the wrong direction. If it’s NEGATIVE…then it’s noise. And you ain’t got time for that.
When it comes to the sweat-loving-fitness-focused-goal-oriented-strength-seeker you transform into when you’re mid-workout, holding onto ANY negativity that slows you down is a waste of your energy.
Negativity around you. Dump it. Negativity you’re holding onto but can’t seem to shake. Dump it. Negativity inside YOUR OWN HEAD. Dump it fast.
Approach your fitness as a safe space. Hide it away from all the other mess that can inhabit our everyday lives and use it as a place to RELEASE and set yourself free. The first step to finding that place? Simple positivity. And it starts inside your own head.

dailyMYB: CELEBRATE SMALL VICTORIES.
When friends tell me they went running or worked out, they often follow it with one of the following statements:
“It was only a mile or two.”
“I was only there for 30 minutes.”
“I took the class but I was terrible.”
No more! Celebrate every victory! Every single one of them add up and build momentum to push you further. Every marathoner begins with one mile. That girl who knows every move of your workout class was once new herself. Don’t beat yourself up for being anywhere else than where you are right now in your fitness. It’s all a practice sports and it takes time! But you have to will yourself through every step with positivity and support. You have to build momentum for yourself to keep going. Every mile counts. Every class, every effort, every time you show up it’s a big freakin’ deal and it should be celebrated. Those celebrations will carry you forward.
Keep moving forward no matter what!

dailyMYB: YOUR BEST SELF IS YOU.
You know that person you imagine? That way you think you look when you’re running — like a gazelle sprinting confidently in the wind. That way you think you look in a workout class with no mirrors around — like an Olympic gymnast with both powerful strength and easy grace. The way you imagine yourself elegantly stretching your way through yoga — perfectly svelte, toned and flexible. But then, we’re often caught in a bad race photo or see ourselves in the mirror at an awkward angle mid-workout. We’re sweaty, frizzy haired and pink-faced. And that visual of ourselves bursts our bubble of endorphin-fueled happiness, calm, strength, and confidence. But the secret is this. That confident, happy, exhilarated, strong and sexy person you imagine yourself as when you haven’t got a mirror or camera to tell you otherwise — that is actually who you truly are. You exude on the outside what you feel on the inside. The more you feed your body those gleeful sweaty moments of triumph, the more it shows on the outside.
When you get active and get sweaty, your more gorgeous than ever. Capture it. Chase it. Embrace it. And it will embrace you back from the inside out.
Get moving. Any way, any how. #moveyourbooty

dailyMYB: BE TOUGH ON YOURSELF. BUT DON’T BE SUCH A JERK!
It’s one thing to get tough on yourself while pushing through that last mile to the very end or getting yourself up off the couch to hit the road and get a great workout in. But it’s entirely another thing to talk smack on yourself. Stop being a self-hater!! Stop putting yourself down. Stop telling yourself you CAN’T. If you heard someone talking about a sister, brother or friend the way many of us harshly hate on ourselves, you’d smack someone! Whether it’s the way we perform, act or look, DROP THE HABIT. It’s wasted energy and here’s the worst part — your body is listening to what your mind is saying. If there are things you want to work on, push that energy into working on them. If there are some things that will just never change (my thick calves and ankles for instance!) you gotta embrace it! Make it work for you! No point in hating on yourself. You are your BEST ally. You are where the positivity starts. You are where the action starts. But YOU gotta be the FIRST one to believe that you can. You gotta believe you’re worth sticking up for, worth taking #1, worth the results of hard work. Once you believe it, so will everyone else. Tell yourself you CAN…and you will.

You are not your mind, your emotions or the circumstances of your life. You are the peaceful observer of your mind and emotions that allows life circumstances to pass through and around you for your evolution to finally come to a place of total acceptance of all that is. Only the peaceful observer remains after all else fades away. Only the peaceful observer in total acceptance of what is can take action towards effectively changing anything. You are only this peaceful observer - everything else is as fleeting as the blink of an eye, choose happiness and don’t buy into it.

MOTIVATION: embrace mistakes.
Don’t let your mistakes and missteps stop you in your tracks. We slip up, we fall, we fuck up. It’s inevitable. We’re human, not robots. Instead of letting those mistakes defeat you, accept them and move on. Make them work for you instead. Take what they’ve taught you and make new memories. You can’t change the past, might as well make the future even better. You officially now know what not to do. You’ve got firsthand experience. Often, that’s really the only way to learn. If you don’t let it slow you down, no one else will either.

REAL PEOPLE ROCK is a series on MYB that features hardworking, real life people who are out there every day giving life their best shot. When I look for motivation, I look to the people that surround me. And if they can do it, then I can do it. We all hold an incredible power to inspire each other with our actions. So tell us your story. Because to me, that’s inspiration at its finest.

REAL PEOPLE ROCK: the charlee, soul cycle instructor edition!
People often ask me how I drag out of bed early on weekdays after late nights out or busy weeks at work and muster the strength for in an early morning workout. The answer lies in people like Charlee, rockstar NYC SOULcycle instructor. The reason I’m willing to be seen in public before showering and makeup, walk 10 blocks to the L train, and carry around sweaty clothes all day is the same reason her classes sell out in mere minutes and there are more dudes lining up to take her class than any other workout class in the city — her classes are a thunderstorm of energy, inspiration and motivation that can truly change the course of your day, even your week. She ain’t so hard on the eyes, either! But don’t think it’s because her classes are easy!! She whoops your booty and pushes you to limits you never thought you could bust through — in short, she don’t mess!! So I thought I’d ask @c__atkins what motivates HER, along with a few other questions, so we can all understand the inner workings of all that positive energy that motivates us so much.

1.  Where do you live? New York City, reppin’ downtown Manhattan :)

2.  What’s your favorite way to Move Your Booty/workout/sweat? It just so happens that my favorite workout is SoulCycle, which makes what I do that much more rewarding. I am obsessed with instructors Danny Kopel (@dannykopel) and Janet Fitzgerald (@spinpimp). I know most people want me to express physically why these workouts are amazing - so to that, SoulCycle is a full-body workout where you have the opportunity to have an instructor lead you through a 45-minute musically-choreographed-sequenced class where you leave feeling successful, energized and worked!  However, the true reason why I love SoulCycle is it is an experience you can’t quite put words to, because you leave with a feeling of euphoria.  It’s definitely something you have to experience on your own!

3.  What motivates you to move your booty? Fitness is a lifestyle. At first you have to create the habit of working out, telling yourself “…get out of bed…get off the computer…that thing you’re doing will still be there when you’re done…GO workout!”   But once you create any habit (fyi, it takes 21 days to make/break a habit) it becomes engrained in your subconscious and you and your body crave that sensation. So, to me, I have suggested to myself and created the habit of working out, that is a part of me. It’s in my constitution!

4.  What’s your greatest MYB accomplishment so far? My goal is constantly a work in progress towards providing a balanced fitness class: physically challenging, musically enticing, entertaining, mentally opening, and spiritually sound.

5.  What’s your current MYB goal? With all the spinning that I do, I would love to attend 3 - 4 yoga classes a week.

6.  What’s your favorite workout song?
  • Afrojack “Pop On Acid”
  • Hyper Crush “Werk Me (Benzi and Dstar Remix)”
  • Sleigh Bells “Kids”
  • Diddy & Dirty Money “Ass on the Floor
7.  What’s one piece of workout clothing, equipment, or accessory you couldn’t live without:
8.  If you could share one workout secret in the world, what would it be? Working out is a mind game, so you can pretty much talk yourself into anything. Now that piece of info can work for you or it can work against you.  Next time you’re debating on working out, take responsibility for your thoughts and see if you’re really just making excuses not to work out.

9.  What’s your workout style?  (aka SWEATstyle) — What kind of look do you rock? My workout style is  as functional as it gets. I prefer tight fitting clothes (ex: Nike Pro Combat pants) and typically just rock a sports bar - the underlying reasons being I dislike when I feel suffocated when my workout shirt or pants get too wet!

10.  How does your fitness life spill over and affect the rest of your life? A quote that I read in a book, and have sinse adopted as my own mantra/quote is:  “…how you do anything is how you do everything…”  How much energy I put into staying fit and leading a healthy lifestyle is the same amount of energy I put into my personal relationships, my work relationships, staying educated, and contributing to LIFE!

MOTIVATION: believe you can.
It seems quite simple really. You want something? Are you working towards something? Have any goals lately? If you don’t believe you can do it, why should anyone else? Why should your body when your mind isn’t on board? Simply believe in what you want. Believe in yourself. Don’t shoot yourself down before you’ve even begun. Will yourself towards your goals. Get out of your own way. Be your own cheerleader. Push yourself towards that thing you want. Don’t accept no for an answer. Do not back away. Mentally psych yourself out in the direction of your goals. And it won’t be just a belief or a dream—it will become your reality. But only when you treat it that way.
Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it.  High-res
