MOTIVATION: “it’s a mental thing.”
Had an AWESOME yoga date with Teddi last night. She reminded me why yoga is so clutch to our go-go-go lifestyle when she said, “it’s a mental thing for me.”
Sure, yoga pants will make your booty rocks those yoga pants and get your arms ripped like Madonna (but before she went overboard). But there’s more to it than that. It’s a mental thing. Rarely do we just stop, follow a flow, zone out, and go through a workout that’s intense, but graceful. Some days you want a kickass workout with blaring music and frantic movement (run, cycle, weights). But in the never-ending search for balance in our busy lives, we know when we need to schlep ourselves to the yoga studio to sweat, zen out and breathe for a different kind of post-workout high.
Yoga is a “mental dump,” as I like to call it. No matter what is going on in our lives, physically slowing down our body and releasing all that shaky, sweaty and strong energy forces our minds to follow suit. And sometimes your mind needs even more release than your muscles. High-res

MOTIVATION: yoga how you wanna!

You can still appreciate the rich history of yoga while interweaving it into your own life in a modern way.

Last night I had an AWESOME yoga experience with my friends Jake and Enrica (an awesome teacher who trained @ Laughing Lotus NYC) who cooked dinner while leading a yoga class in the living room/kitchen. Talk about amazing smells while inhaling and exhaling! Why choose between dinner date OR yoga class? Do both!

How do you YOGA?!

dailyMYB: TEARS OF SWEAT.
We’ve all been there. Maybe it’s a fitness babe thing, but I’m guessing it’s hit a couple dudes along the way. You’re in a dark cycling class and it’s 45 minutes into the 50 minute set. You’re pushing way past your comfort zone and just when your mind can’t push your body through one more pedal, your gut releases that extra supply of courage and your legs speed up again. Meanwhile your instructor is yelling motivational quotes in the air and while during minutes 1 - 44 you weren’t really feeling it, all of a sudden the words are speaking directly to you and only you. It’s like the instructor knows exactly what kind of tough day, rough week or challenging month you’ve had and is personally talking directly at you. As your legs speed through and your heart is about to explode out of your chest and your last bits of energy are sweating out of every pore, it hits you: “WTF am I crying?!”
It’s not always a weeping sad cry. It’s more of a moist eye release — in technical terms. But in non-technical terms, it’s all that BS we keep deep down inside coming out. It’s all that crap we stress over and the anxiety was obsess over exiting the body. When we sweat and workout, we don’t just release toxins and energy — emotions are wrapped up in that, too. Whether it’s at the end of a yoga class on a heavy day, during a tough workout class you barely survived or a long run you push yourself through to reach your maximum mileage, sometimes your insides need to sweat it out too. And that’s what we call “tears of sweat.” Let it all out!

dailyMYB: DIY WORKOUTS YOU CAN DO ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.
“I don’t have time.”“Work is really busy.”“The gym is really far away.”“It’s too cold to run outside.”“I’m intimidated by yoga studios.”“Workout classes are too expensive.”“I can’t afford a personal trainer.”“I need a plan, but I just haven’t found the right one.”
These are one of the many reasons we all don’t workout regularly. Sure, they’re “excuses,” but they’re REAL. They’re honest reasons that keep us from getting to the gym, committing to a regular workout and really enjoying it. But why wait for the right opportunity or workout or instructor to come to YOU when you could bring YOUR favorite workout to you—anytime, anywhere! And maybe even for free…
Below are a few FREE workouts you can do even if you’ve only got a few free minutes, even if you’re downright broke, even if you don’t belong to a gym, even if you only want to work out in the privacy of your own home in your undies!
1) Nike Training ClubThis FREE app is your workout buddy whenever you need it, wherever you are and for as long or short or as hard or beginner as you want it. If you can’t make it to the gym and you want a quick abs blast, NTC. If you’re in a hotel gym and need a workout that doesn’t require much equipment — or any equipment at all — NTC. If you just don’t know exactly what to workout and how to work it out, NTC. It’s customizable, easy to use and inspiring. Trying it doesn’t cost you a thing. Get to it!
2) Your workout gurus are online. Find them! Dig into the Internet and I guarantee you that you’ll discover an entire YouTube channel of your favorite workout guru (or soon to be favorite) showing you how to do a workout right in your own home. Set up your computer, iPad or whatever to face the living room, grab your mat or hit the rug and get your workout on right then and there! I discovered these yoga YouTube videos over Thanksgiving.
3) The Power of PLANKING. There are a few easy moves that seriously get your heart racing. PLANKING is one of them. Literally one minute will get your sweating. Try it for 2 minutes. 4 minutes?! Try alternating minute planks (minute up, minute down, minute up…etc) for 5-10 minutes. Boom. Workout complete. You have time for that right?! Thought so.
The definition of a “workout” is WHATEVER you decide it is. Make your workouts work for you. If you can’t go to them, make them come to you. DIYworkouts are ready anywhere, anytime.

MOTIVATION: throw away that scale.

We’ve been talking about it over here for a while now and now Tara Stiles is taking on the topic, too. THE SCALE.

This thing that’s supposed to know more about your body than you do. This thing that can control your mind, the way you see yourself and your mood. JUMP OFF IT! Nobody knows more about your body than you — we just gotta tune in.

Check out what Tara has to say: VIDEO: Throw Away the Scale (by TaraStilesYoga)

**BONUS - Tara walks us through her typical weekly grocery shopping — this healthy & fit chick knows what’s up. Also she baked you cookies. #eatrealfood

MOTIVATION: DIYyoga.

No matter where you are, how much or little time you have, you can squeeze this full body yoga quickie session in under 10 minutes flat. Boom. Thanks to @tarastiles for making yoga so accessible, cool and no big deal — which ya know, is a very big deal.

I was very close to sitting on the couch for the duration of my Saturday thanks to a Thanksgiving leftovers hangover and yoga studio holiday schedules. But a quick google search offered up unlimited yoga for free! How about that. Hooray interwebs! We literally have NO EXCUSES anymore. A great sweat is literally a click away for exactly $0. Get moving. Get sweaty. Get awesome.

And oh yeah, get your yoga on by clicking above.

dailyMYB: DO IT WHERE & HOW YOU WANNA.

Take 10 minutes or two hours. Do it in your pajamas. Squeeze it in between meetings. Heck, do it straight up right in the middle of your living room.

Working out - do it where and how you wanna. This whole “exercise” thing is kind of silly when you think about it. Our bodies were made to move, function and work hard. But in order to “go workout” we often feel that we need the perfect outfit, the exact right accessories, the optimal spot in the best class, the nicest gym… Sure, all that is nice. But you don’t NEED it to get your sweat on.

Don’t ditch your workout completely just because you can’t get your favorite bike at the exact right cycling class at the exact right time with the exact right teacher for a full 90 minute sweat. Do something else. Take 45 minutes. Take 15. Bust out some yoga in the morning. Dip into the FREE treasure-trove that is Nike Training Club and get a solid 15, 30 minutes in. Go for a quick jog—2 miles or 12, it’s still a solid run.

Whatever you do, do SOMETHING and do something you like. Just keep doing it. Anywhere, anyhow.

MOTIVATION: how the heck do i headstand???

Ever wondered - how the HECK do I headstand? Ever looked at how-to drawings and been totally confused because your body doesn’t exactly DO that…

Here’s a great video showing exactly how to headstand one baby step at a time.

dailyMYB: find your zen.
We all sweat the same. But HOW we like to sweat varies from person to person. You don’t have to workout like everyone else you know. It can be as hardcore, as fast, slow, hot, cold, upside down, geared up, layered up, bare naked, weighted, whatever, as you like. Find your #SWEATstyle and SWEAT the way YOU WANT to. #doyou #itsyoursweat
Personally, I’m a running, yoga, core, cycling, bootcamp kinda girl. How do YOU like to sweat?? moveyourbootyblog@gmail.com

MOTIVATION: yoga in politics??

You know how PASSIONATE we all are about yoga? How much we want to share it with people, talk about it with friends, invite new yogis to class, and connect to fellow yogis? You know how we take what we learn in yoga and relate it how we perform at our jobs, in our relationships and in lives in general?

So why doesn’t it comes up in conversation in politics? Why do we see so-called “politics” as something on the COMPLETE opposite spectrum as so-called “yoga?” The truth is, it’s not.

A “yoga” mindset dictates so much in how we decided to do things, eat things, say things, etc. So why don’t we often connect it to political decisions and civic action? The answer is: we should.

An AWESOME organization called YOGA VOTES wants to do something about just that.

What is YOGA VOTES?

YogaVotes is a nonpartisan campaign to awaken a new demographic of mindful voters—sparking higher voter turnout among the 20 million Americans who practice yoga.

Watch the VIDEO to see what this movement is all about and then pledge to get your VOTE on come November 6th!

YOU are Yoga Votes and can join in on the action. Check out their website here: www.yogavotes.org

VIDEO: Yoga the Vote 2012 (by Yoga Votes)

Like the man in search of a martini, it’s always [workout] class time somewhere.

Check out this fantastic article from the NYTimes’ Sunday Styles. I love how obsessed we all get with our specific workout or instructor. It’s proof that a workout class is more than just a workout class. Forget chefs and socialites—fitness gurus are the next line of celebrities. Keep it up people!!

MOTIVATION: yoga for everyone.

“Yoga for everyone” isn’t exactly how most people look at yoga. @tarastiles is trying to change all that. Check out this awesome HEARTLAND YOGI video about Tara heading back to her hometown to throw a Yoga party.

dailyMYB: HOW STRONG IS A SINGLE SONG?
It can literally lift you out of bed. It can push you through an entire mile. It can make you sprint the last .2 after running 26 miles. It can scrub off all the effects of a crappy day in minutes. Do not underestimate the power of a good song. But it’s up to you to position these POWER SONGS at the right moment in time when you’ll need them most. At the beginning of an early morning run. When your alarm clock goes off. Up the biggest hill in the park. At the end of a long bike ride. In the middle of your yoga mix when things get tough. Before a big meeting. Wherever you need them, have them in your back pocket there ready and waiting. Use the insanely strong power of music to your advantage! Pump your ipod full of the best pop, rock, hardcore or whatever kinds of songs you love. It could change everything about the way you see a situation. It could help you let go of negativity you want to shake off. It can change your direction in life—seriously! Music is like your own personal cheer squad ready to rock out at a moment’s notice! Empower it to empower you. And ROCK ON! High-res
